UP Assembly Election 2027: Beyond Caste Arithmetic, a Test of Delivery and Trust
Uttar Pradesh is preparing for an Assembly election that will influence not only the state’s government but also the direction of national politics. Voting is expected in February–March 2027 for all 403 Assembly constituencies, with 202 seats required for a majority. The Chief Election Commissioner has stated that the election will be conducted on schedule before the current Assembly’s term ends on May 22, 2027.

The BJP entered its second consecutive term in 2022 after winning 255 of the 403 seats, while the Samajwadi Party secured 111 seats. Along with its allies, the BJP obtained a comfortable majority and demonstrated that its combination of leadership, welfare programmes, organisational strength and social coalition remained electorally effective.
The political environment changed considerably during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party won 37 parliamentary seats, the BJP won 33, and Congress secured six. Overall, the SP-Congress-led INDIA alliance won 43 of the state’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the NDA won 36. The result showed that the BJP could be challenged when opposition parties coordinated their candidates and consolidated anti-incumbency votes.
Nevertheless, the 2024 Assembly by-elections produced a different signal. The BJP-led NDA won seven of nine seats, while the Samajwadi Party won two. These contrasting results demonstrate an important feature of Uttar Pradesh politics: voters may make different choices in parliamentary, Assembly and by-election contests. Local candidates, constituency-level organisation and turnout can be as important as statewide popularity.
